Penguin Annual Lecture Delivered by Ramachandra Guha

On 25 October, internationally renowned historian and writer Ramachandra Guha delivered the prestigious Penguin Annual Lecture in New Delhi. The lecture titled 'The Indian Political Tradition—and Those Who Made It' was based on Guha’s highly anticipated new book Makers of Modern India (Penguin Viking), where he delves into India’s political traditions by profiling nineteen Indians who had a defining impact on the formation and evolution of the Indian republic. Makers of Modern India, published by Penguin India this month, is Guha’s first book after his much-publicized move to Penguin.

The Penguin Annual Lecture series has featured some of the world's most respected leaders, thinkers and writers, and builds on Penguin India’s commitment to bring the finest minds in the world in direct contact with Indian audiences. Previous speakers have included luminaries like Thomas Friedman, Chris Patten and Amartya Sen. It is the only lecture series of its kind to be organized by a publishing house in India.

The 2010 Lecture was a tremendous success, with a stupendous turnout of over 700 people, and with the audience completely engrossed throughout the two-hour-long lecture and interaction. Those present included numerous well-respected authors and academicians, key opinion-makers and a great deal of media – both print and electronic. We had tied up with one of India’s leading television networks and an interaction between Guha and Barkha Dutt - one of India’s foremost news anchors followed the lecture; both the lecture and the interaction will be televised over national television.

The 2010 Penguin Lecture – the 4th in the series - is certain to be remembered as one of the highlights on the literary calendar for the year!
